MediaHack is an innovative accelerator program launched by HT Media in partnership with North Base Media, an international
media investment firm co-founded by Marcus Brauchli, former top editor of The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal.


And the point is?

To give entrepreneurs like you a unique chance to participate in one of the most exciting transformations of our time, the rise of digital media, and us a chance to spot the best ideas out there for bringing content and advertising to the hundreds of millions now coming online. By 2018, half a billion Indians will have access to the internet, many for the first time. If you want to be part of this change – MediaHack is the place to be. MediaHack aims to provide selected start-ups with unparalleled access to media networks, mentorship and initial capital.

htmediaHT Media Ltd. HT Media is one of the largest media houses in India, with leading brands in Print, Radio, Education and Digital space. On the Digital front it has incubated and scaled up Shine.com, HTCampus.com, Desimartini.com & Digital Quotient. HT Media is an active investor in the digital space. It has recently invested in Round One, a referral based recruitment platform and acquired Webitude, a social media marketing platform. HT Media has also invested in early stage Digital & Media funds – Blume Ventures (Leading Internet Start-up fund in India) & Tandem Capital (Mobile Start-up fund based in Silicon Valley).
North Base Media
North Base Media NBM is a specialized media investment and advisory firm focused on businesses that can become media leaders in markets where digital shifts are disrupting existing media industry. Founded by Marcus Brauchli, a leading international media entrepreneur who was editor of The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post, and Saša Vučinić, founder of the Media Development Loan Fund. NBM has backed nearly a dozen media businesses and a Latin American media incubator (mediafactory.vc) since starting off two years ago. Some of its investments already have raised second funding rounds at multiples of their previous valuations.

  • Datami – US & India A U.S. technology company developing a product that would enable media companies in emerging countries to enable wider viewing of content through sponsored data.

  • El Meme – Argentina El Meme helps brands to build sincere and lasting relationships with their audiences, creating and sharing attractive and useful content, reaching out to millions of people in Latin America.

  • El Cambur – Venezuela El Cambur is a network of digital media services which proposes opinions about the country and the world with high quality information presented through briefs, graphics and audio-visual texts.

  • GKillCity – Ecuador GKillCity is a digital communications project for citizen counterculture. GKillCity seeks to create more content in audio and mobile applications, and makes use of digital TV channels.

  • Piano Media – Austria Piano Media is the world’s largest provider of digital subscription services. It offers the latest online content monetization platform technology to more than 630 websites globally.

  • Cielo24 – USA Cielo24 delivers searchable captions™, media data and media intelligence for large media platform partners in the online education, enterprise, news and entertainment markets.

  • Atlas Obscura – USA Atlas Obscura is the definitive guide to the world's wondrous and curious places, in an age where everything seems to have been explored and there is nothing new to be found.

  • News Deeply – USA News Deeply is a new media and technology firm dedicated to innovating and improving the user experience of complex global issues.

  • Blume Ventures – India Leading Internet startup fund based out of India

Team

Marcus Brauchli Marcus Brauchli As editor. Marcus led the newsrooms of The Washington Post
and The Wall Street Journal at a time of monumental digital change. He has extensive global experience, and continues to be a media advisor to several media conglomerates. He is a graduate of the Columbia University and was a Neiman Fellow at the Harvard University.
Rajiv VermaRajiv VermaRajiv joined HT Media as CEO in 2004. With over 30 years
of cross-sectoral experience, he has been responsible for the focus on new business, as well as major international collaborations with partners like Virgin Radio, Burda, The Wall Street Journal and Washington Post. Rajiv is a Mechanical Engineer from Delhi College of Engineering.
Saša VučinićSaša VučinićSaša co-founded Media Development Loan Fund (MDLF),
which has invested US$ 105 Mn in over 75 projects across 20 countries. He has been elected as the Senior Ashoka Fellow as well as the 1999 World Economic Forum Global Leader for Tomorrow. He is a graduate from the University of Belgrade and the Executive education program of Harvard Business School .
Priyavrat BhartiaPriyavrat BhartiaPriyavrat is on the board of HT Media since 2005. He has over 17 years
of experience, starting as an analyst with Wasserstein Perella & Co, New York. He is also on the board of many leading businesses, and a firm believer in Digital Transformation. Priyavrat is an MBA from Stanford University, and a Graduate from Dartmouth College.
Stuart Karle Stuart KarleStuart was the COO of the Reuters News Division, managing 3,000+ employees. He has also served as General Counsel for The Wall Street Journal. A professional with over 29 years of experience, he is also a professor of Media Law at Columbia University. He is a Graduate from Columbia University and the University of Chicago.
Amit GargAmit GargAmit joined HT Media in 2005, and has been instrumental in starting
HT’s foray into Internet and Digital Businesses. He currently heads all digital businesses for HT. He has over 22 years of experience managing businesses at HT, Whirlpool, Nokia & Asian Paints. He is an Engineer from IT, BHU and MBA from IIM-Lucknow

Program

MediaHack is a media and advertising technology accelerator launched by HT Media and NBM. Selected start-ups will get initial funding, and can leverage HT and NBM’s decades of global media experience, access to the most valuable media networks and their existing ecosystem to grow exponentially

Timelines & Eligibility Criteria

  • Should be independent of any large corporate ownership.
  • Focus should be on building a viable, growth-oriented business that
    • Produces, aggregates, delivers news, journalism, content, advertising; or
    • Technology that supports media businesses.
  • Should have a product prototype and a clear idea of how to build the business .
  • Teams with at least one member with technical background will enjoy significant advantage.

MediaHack.in is an accelerator program launched by HT Media and North Base Media. It is a platform for entrepreneurs wanting to be part of the change in the way media in consumed in India, be it content, ad-tech or distribution. At MediaHack, you’ll be funded and given access, guidance and mentorship to convert your idea into a viable business.
Technology-led businesses which impact media in any way are good candidates for investment. This could include video, advertising, social media and avenues of delivering content to readers we may not have thought of.
We look for smart, cohesive teams with great ideas which can scale up and execute
Based on how evolution and scale of the business, we will invest up to $ 100,000 in the business.
We would provide guidance and mentorship from media professionals in the system as well as connections to the entire media network we have. Also, if required, we will also provide work spaces and related infrastructure
Basic details like team, idea, market opportunity and a plan for execution should suffice. There is no requirement to disclose ‘confidential information’. We can sign an NDA at a later stage to cover confidential information we might need to evaluate
Valuation will be determined by our experts and differ company by company
